Significant Internet Disruption Impacts Dozens Online Platforms and Apps

A widespread internet disruption has impacted many sites and applications around the world, and users experiencing problems accessing the internet due to difficulties at Amazon’s cloud computing service.

The disrupted services encompass the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-operated operations like its key e-commerce site and the Ring security device manufacturer.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and also reports of difficulties reaching the HMRC website on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring users used networks to state their doorbells were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of disruptions on particular apps totaled the tens of thousands for each platform.

Officials confirmed that the outage started in the east coast of the America at the cloud division, a division that provides essential internet infrastructure for a host of companies, who lease resources on Amazon servers. AWS is the most extensive online services service.

Shortly after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “higher failure rates and delays” for AWS services in a region on the eastern US of the US. The cascading impact appeared to hit platforms worldwide, with the Downdetector site indicating issues with the same sites in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors online failures, further indicated a increase in outages on the start of the week, including several cases located in the state of Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the outage started.
